SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD

The alumni network in UK are making remarkable contributions to the country and the world by founding organisations, developing new ideas and products and delivering beyond what was thought possible as public servants, educators, artists, scientists, engineers, and lawyers. They share a deep commitment to improving society and are transforming their communities locally and globally every day.

The UK Friends of the University of Auckland – Special Recognition Award (SRA) recognises the impact and contribution that alumni in UK are having here and around the world.

THE 2024 AWARDS

The Special Recognition Awards recognise Alumni who have attained distinction in professional achievements or have made significant contributions to society or the University in the UK. We had two winners in 2024 - Jennifer Flay and Brad Irwin.

JENNIFER FLAY

Jennifer was presented with the award for her accomplishments as an internationally acclaimed galleries, scholar of contemporary art and an author. A powerhouse of the art world, Jennifer led the renewal of one of the most prestigious art events – Paris’s Foire International d’Art Contemporain. The Art Fair was a failing enterprise when she joined in 2003 as the Artistic Director, a role she held until 2010. Since then, she has been the General Director, and the fair has become a major annual event in a city famous for its connections to the arts. In 2012, Jennifer was awarded the Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and in 2015 she received the highest honorary decoration for civilians in France – the Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur.

DR SHANE LEGG

Shane was presented with the award for his achievements as a researcher and as Chief Scientist and Co-Founder of the artificial intelligence firm, Deepmind Technologies. DeepMind is a London-based artificial intelligence firm that aims to mimic human thought processes. In 2014 DeepMind joined forces with Google to accelerate its work, while continuing to set its own research agenda. Today the application of Deepmind’s work is vast and varied. One example: it partnered with Moorfields Eye Hospital to develop faster ways of identifying – and better ways of understanding – common eye diseases from routine scans. Its technology is helping doctors diagnose acute kidney injury up to 48-hours earlier than current methods.
